The State Institution "Bayanaul State National Nature Park" was established in 1985 and is the first national park in Kazakhstan. It is situated on the northern edge of the Kazakh Uplands. Initially, the territory spanned 50,688 hectares. Subsequently, in accordance with the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan No. 1305 dated December 27, 2007, the park's territory was expanded by 17,764.8 hectares. As a result, the total area of the national park is 68,452.8 hectares, of which 19,069 hectares are covered by forest.
The establishment of the state nature park in the Bayanaul mountain-forest oasis is fundamentally based on the scientifically grounded integration of mass recreation and nature conservation. This dictated a principled approach to territorial organization, where the majority of the area is designated as functional zones. This contributes not only to purely environmental protection goals but also to the preservation of these lands for tourism purposes, as the territory is practically unsuitable for other economic sectors. In selecting the territory for the nature park, considerations included not only the preservation of the Bayanaul mountain-forest oasis as a unique massif amidst the Kazakh steppes but also its attractiveness, beauty, and aesthetic value.
Bayanaul National Nature Park consists of three divisions:
Bayanaul Division: Comprises the Karazhar, Aksan, and Bayanaul sectors. Area: 19,188 hectares.
Zhasybay Division: Comprises the Toraygyr, Egindibulak, Birzhankol, and Zhasybay sectors. Area: 22,904 hectares.
Dolba Division: Comprises the Muryntal, Kurkeli, and 1-May sectors. These sectors are located at a distance of 25 to 45 km from each other. Area: 26,360 hectares.
The "Kyzyl-Tau" State Nature Sanctuary of republican significance, with a zoological focus, was established by the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR No. 69 dated February 17, 1986. Based on Article 17 of the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On Specially Protected Natural Territories" (No. 175 dated July 7, 2006), the "Kyzyltau" Nature Sanctuary was transferred to the operational management by order of the Forestry and Hunting Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture.
The area of the Kyzyltau Sanctuary is 60,000 hectares. It was established to protect wildlife, specifically the Kazakhstan mountain sheep (Argali), which is listed in the Red Data Book of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
